Whether you use charcoal, wood, gas or electricity for grilling, a moment's inattention can spell disaster. Here are some fire safety tips to ensure a summer of safe grilling:
Keep grills a safe distance from combustible materials, including decks, siding on your house, or the garage. If you can feel the material getting warm from heat from the grill, it is too close!
Check gas hoses to ensure they are not leaking. Use a soapy water solution on fittings - if the solution "bubbles," the fitting is leaking
Never store propane cylinders inside the home or garage. Keep them in a well-ventilated area
Propane cylinders that are older than 3 years, or are showing signs of age should be replaced
Establish a "kids-free" area 3' around the grill
Never add charcoal lighter fluid once the grill is lit, and never use gasoline to light grills
Keep a fire extinguisher nearby, and know how to use it
When finished grilling, turn off the fuel supply at the tank, then at the grill
SPRING/SUMMER FIRE SAFETY TIPS
Allow your lawn mower/tractor to cool off prior to refueling or storing in shed or garage
Keep gas/fuel containers in well-ventilated locations. Store only approved gasoline storage cans indoors
Test home smoke alarms monthly. Ensure the batteries have been changed in the past 12 months
Discuss your home fire evacuation plans with your family
Check dryer exhaust ducts for excess lint accumulation
